November - Framed Print Sale Online.

Gallery Meraki is pleased to announce an online framed print sale for the month of November on our website.  Each of our three fantastic photographers were asked to pick 6 of their images for a sale on framed 12x18 and 16x24 prints.  The prints below are samples of some of the beautiful work you can find in the sale.  The 12x18 prints have a white mat and classic black wood frame in a finished size of 20x26" and the 16x24 prints have a finished size of 24x32".  Both sizes come ready to hang and shipping in the US is included in the sale price.  The 12x18's are priced at $150. and the 16x24s are priced at $200.  Check it out today.

Fall Photography Workshop

Gallery Meraki hosted a fall Photography workshop taught by Carl Stoveland and Julie Scholz.  We had a perfect morning out in the woods and took photos at Indian Brook Falls in Garrison, NY and Minisceongo Falls in Stony Point, NY.  After shooting for several hours we headed back to the gallery for a yummy lunch provided by The Filling Station (TFS) in Haverstraw and then onto an afternoon of editing and printing.

It was an amazing day all around!  Gallery Meraki has now hosted three photography workshops.  We will be announcing more dates soon!

Meet the artist Interview with Julie Scholz

Next up in our interview series with the artist photographers of Gallery Meraki is Julie Scholz.

Gallery Meraki -  What is it about photography that made you choose it as your medium?

Julie Scholz - What appeals to me about photography is that it is about capturing a moment, seeing and feeling something and expressing that in the pictures you make. 

Gallery Meraki - Color or B&W?

Julie Scholz - When I was shooting with film, it was mostly B&W, I loved the process of being in the darkroom. Since digital, I've been seeing the world in color, I view the world around me as paintings waiting to happen.

Gallery Meraki -  When choosing a composition what is your process.

Julie Scholz - I like to compose in camera, imagining what the result would look like very large on someone's wall.

Gallery Meraki -  Do you preplan your shots if so how much planning?

Julie Scholz - I do not really pre plan my shots but if I've found a great location or subject I will return again and again if possible.

Gallery Meraki: Who is your biggest inspiration as a photographer and why?

Carl: Early on I fell in love with the work of Ansel Adams.  Cliché maybe, but there was real power in his images that has stood the test of time.

Gallery Meraki:  Do you ever see yourself working in film again?  When you shot film what size and type were your goto films.

Carl: I do from time to time or for certain projects should medium format B&W film.  One of the most satisfying sounds I know is the sound of the shutter on a medium format camera.  I was always a tri-X guy, but the current ilford B&W films are really good.

Gallery Meraki:  What alternate process or style would you like to spend time learning.

Carl: I love Dye Transfer prints.  My first job was making Dye Transfers with my Dad.  I’d love to do that again.  I am also a nut for infrared photography.  I shoot a lot of IR landscapes and architectural images.

Gallery Meraki: Color or B&W?

Carl: Depends on the day and my mood, but I do love B&W!

Meet the Artists of Gallery Meraki - Carl Stoveland

This week leading up to the grand opening of Gallery Meraki we will do a series of posts introducing you to the artist / photographers at the gallery with some interview questions.  First up is photographer Carl Stoveland.

Gallery Meraki  - What is it about photography that made you choose it as your medium.  

Carl - I was hooked by the age of 4 sitting in my Dad’s darkroom watching the magic happen!  I knew then I wanted to do something with photography.

Gallery Meraki  -  What makes photography different from other artistic mediums.

Carl - I believe it is the same, but with different tools.  Its all about creativity and expressing an idea.  Photography gets a bit of a bad rep because the finished product is reproducible and inherently considered worth less than a painting.  I would argue that it takes just as much dedication and commitment to the photographic craft to become a true master as it  does for painters and sculptors.

Gallery Meraki  - You hear many in the art world proclaiming the 'death of photography is here' do you believe this and why?

Carl - Absolutely not.  In the short span of time photography has been around there has always been change and refinements.  The tools keep getting better and better.  Photography is available to more and more people and the completion keeps raising the bar.  I think that argument is made mostly by photographers not willing to make the leap from film to digital.

The big day is drawing near!  After a summer of cleaning, painting and building our new space, the grand opening bash is Saturday, September 27th from 7 to 9pm.  We are really proud of the way the gallery turned out and can't wait to show it off.  Over the next few days We will post interviews with our three artist owners of the gallery.
